Start with 4 beads or sets of beads. (A set of beads is a sequence of beads that will repeat on each side of the unit.) Pass through all of them again, pulling them into a square ring. Pass through one or more again, exiting where another unit is to be added (Figure 1).

Pick up 3 more beads or sets of beads to add to the one just exited to make a new square. Pass through the bead from the original square, completing the new square. Pass through 2 of the new beads, exiting where another unit is to be added (Figure 2).
